Opinion Article: Dr Katherine Michelmore, BDA Deputy Leader and Spokesperson on the Environment, Incinerator Ash, 3rd Sept 2010

There have been a number of articles in the local press recently regarding planned refurbishment of the Tynes Bay Incinerator.  Trash has been temporarily stored in bales at Morgan’s point due to the inability of the waste facility to process the country’s refuse.  The need to store baled waste had been anticipated, but was required to begin earlier than planned.  Reflection on this situation leads us to question exactly how we have come to this point, where tons of domestic waste must be stored above ground and in public view from the waterfront?

Statement from Alex DeCouto, BDA spokesperson for Labour and Immigration, Bermudians in the Contruction Industry, 2nd Sept 2010

alex decouto   Alex DeCouto - BDA Caucus Chairman and Spokesperson for Labour & Immigration

Louis Somner and I agree more frequently than the media would have you believe.

We actually get along quite well, we've served on a few committees together, and I genuinely believe that we ultimately want the same things for Bermudians in the industry.

Opinion Article: Michael W. Branco, Spokesperson on Energy, 25 Aug 2010

michael branco    Michael Branco - BDA Spokesperson for Energy

Over the past six months the Bermuda Democratic Alliance has been meeting with representatives of the energy industry in Bermuda and the message is clear. In order to deal with the challenges of increasing fuel costs, rising demand for electricity and aging energy infrastructure, Bermuda must forge ahead with an alternative energy strategy now.  Bermuda requires an energy supply that is both affordable and responsive to our needs in the decades to come.

Restriction of work permits Statement: Alex DeCouto, BDA spokesperson for Labour and Immigration, 19 Aug 2010

Certainly this move is not unprecedented, when the Berkeley School project suddenly was halted there was a ban in place then because the Minister at that time was concerned that those workers needed to find alternate jobs.

But if there are companies that are flouting Immigration regulations then certainly they should be brought to justice because those of us playing by the rules and making efforts to hire, train and promote Bermudians are tired of hearing about firms getting away with not doing so.

Housing Statement, Donte Hunt JP, Spokesperon on Housing, 18 Aug 2010

Firstly we would like to commend the government on the first byproduct of the derelict housing scheme that was introduced in 2006.  While affordable housing no longer occupies the top position as concerns for Bermudians as it once did in 2006, it still maintains a extremely pivotal need for many who find themselves living in conditions that from a contextual perspective are substandard.

South Shore Environment -Dr. Katherine Michelmore - Deputy Leader & Spokesperson of the Evironment, 14 August 2010

It is well recognized that Bermuda has a fragile environment with limited space and competing pressures for development. We have an expanding population and rising demand for affordable housing. Our land mass however is static, and each new development poses potential threats to our open space, wildlife and our environmental biodiversity. This conflict emphasizes the need for careful examination of each development, and large-scale developments in particular, as the environmental impact may be considerable.

Statement: Mark Pettingill, BDA spokesperson on Justice, 11 Aug 2010

Another Bermuda Shooting. Not so long ago I stood on a street corner outside of my office talking to Yankee Boy Rawlins about the way things are on the Streets. He told me it had changed a lot over the years and that the young guys these days had no respect. As with many people in the Criminal Justice system I knew Yankee and knew about his reputation and sadly I was not surprised when he turned up as the latest victim in the on going madness that is plaguing Bermuda.

Michael M. Fahy JP – Chairman Bermuda Democratic Alliance

Royal Gazette 5 August 2010

Over the past number of months, members of the Bermuda Democratic Alliance have been meeting with members of the International Business (IB) community to get a sense of how the industry, which is Bermuda's biggest employer and driver of our economy, views Bermuda as a jurisdiction. What we have heard is nothing short of disappointing. Sadly there has been a common thread through the commentary. Summarised below are the four main points which have consistently arisen in these conversations:

Silent exodus of jobs

As I have stated on a number of occasions, there is a consistent trickle of jobs leaving Bermuda to other jurisdictions. This was reflected in the 2009 employment briefs which showed that IB employment had declined by seven percent. For anyone in international business, all you need to do is look around. The guest workers tend to disappear first and as such most Bermudians don't see the true extent of the problem – hence the "silent exodus".
